Sir Bob Charles On Wednesday 1st July 2009 Montrose Links and Royal Montrose Golf Club were honoured to play host to the only left handed golfer to win the Open championship, Sir Bob Charles.
Sir Bob who won the 1963 Open at Royal Lytham was conducting a wish list tour of Scottish courses he wanted to play. They included North Berwick, Montrose Links, Cruden Bay, Lossiemouth, Castle Stuart, Brora and Tain. Sir Bob was partnered at Montrose by MGLL Chairman Alan Crow and professional Jason Boyd. The match was played in beautiful sunny weather and Sir Bob played round the course in an excellent 71 strokes, two under his age of 73. Sir Bob Charles has won more than 80 tournaments worldwide including 23 times on the US Champions Tour, the world match play in 1969 and the British Seniors Open in 1993. He was knighted in 1999 for his services to golf and has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame Charles was accompanied on his mini Scottish tour by his great friend Jim Hardie who arranged all the courses and matches. The reason Charles chose Montrose as one of his wish list courses was entirely due to his caddy Russell, who used to regularly play the Open week at Montrose and stayed in Grey Harlings B & B for many years. |
