In Memoriam
Reverend Tom Long

It is with deep regret that we have to inform members of the death of Reverend Tom Long on 2nd May 2009.

Tom Long was born in Glasgow in August 1909 of Irish parents.  Following University and the Theological College he became a Baptist Minister and held charges in Fraserburgh and Aberdeen.

On the outbreak of the Second World War he volunteered for Chaplaincy duties and served in North Africa, where he was mentioned in despatches, Sicily and Italy.  At the close of hostilities he was appointed a staff chaplain at Army HQ in Palestine.

He returned to civilian life in Aberdeenshire and was persuaded to enter the teaching profession.  In 1954 he became an assistant teacher of English at Montrose Academy and in 1958 he became head of the Academy Primary department, and in 1962 was appointed Head Teacher of Ferryden Primary School.

Tom joined the Victoria Golf Club in 1954 and played regularly until his 98th year and could be seen regularly in the club entertaining other Senior members until just two weeks before his death.  At the age of 91 he achieved a lifetime ambition by scoring a hole in one.

Tom is survived by his daughter Doreen and grandchildren Catriona, Fiona, Calum and Bryony.

His funeral service took place at 10.30 am on Monday 11th May at the Old Kirk, Montrose, and burial was at Sleepyhillock.
