Royal Montrose Golf Club Vs Royal Blackheath Golf Club

In May 2007 twelve members of Royal Montrose Golf Club travelled to Royal Blackheath Golf Club in London to play for the King James VI Quaich.

This match restarted an annual competition established between the Royal Albert Golf Club and the Royal Blackheath Golf Club and was last played for in 1984.

Royal Blackheath Golf Club is the oldest Golf Club in existence being formed in 1608 and celebrating its 400th anniversary this year.  With Royal Montrose being the 9th oldest Golf Club celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2010 the event is steeped in history.

On Friday 8th August 2008 Royal Montrose members were delighted to welcome twelve Royal Blackheath members who travelled to Montrose to defend the trophy they won in 2007.

As preparation for the main event on Saturday The Royal Blackheath members participated in the Royal Montrose Greenpark Garage Am/ Am on Friday which they thoroughly enjoyed.

On Saturday 9th August both teams competed strongly in a closely fought match for the King James VI Quaich which Royal Montrose won overall by 5 holes. The Presentation of the Quaich to the winning Royal Montrose Captain Ian A Harley by Royal Blackheath’s team Captain John Bunney OBE, was then followed by dinner and an excellent evening socialising

On Sunday 10th August the teams, complete with sore heads, competed in a friendly greensomes match which was honourably halved.

Despite some inclement weather over the weekend the matches themselves were played in beautiful weather and some of the Blackheath members stayed on after the weekend to play Carnoustie and Edzell.

Royal Montrose members are looking forward to the return match next year at Royal Blackheath to defend the trophy.
