NIGHT GOLF AT ROYAL  MONTROSE - October 2009

Most golfers dream of hitting the ball “out of sight” but on the evening of Friday 16th October ROYAL MONTROSE GOLF CLUB members and guests did just that, when they held their first Night Golf Trophy competition of the 2009 winter season.

A field of 28 members in teams of 4 gathered at 6.45pm to play in a Texas scramble over the Broomfield course in this imaginative and unique form of golf.

Using illuminated golf balls, the teams complete with fluorescent badges, and playing towards illuminated fairways and greens, completed 7 holes of the Broomfield course.

Many strange sounds and colourful sights were seen and heard, as the army of night golfers made their way round the course on a beautifully clear starry night.

After the event, players retired to the clubhouse for the presentation of prizes and refreshments, where they were also served with a plate of stovies to warm them up.

All players thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the event was again hailed a great success with the winning team being ‘Magic 2 x 2’ consisting of M Watters, T Cresdee, A Alston and D Alston.

Highlight of the evening was David Alston sinking his second shot on the 18th of the Broomfield course for an eagle 2 witnessed by a passer-by. The eagle just secured the winning position for the team. All the more unusual being “a shot in the dark”

This night golf competition is another event in the Royal Montrose’s calendar to build up to our 200th anniversary on 1st January 2010 which draws ever closer.
